Cabletec Communications are currently undertaking a Large Fibre Optic and Structured Cabling installation at Bristol International Airport.

The work involves the installation of a fibre link from the Administration Building to the Main Equipment Room in the Basement of the New Terminal. The Cable is being run on an airside route to increase the resiliance of the Network and will run via the Air Traffic Control building.

The project presents unique obstacles which have to be solved with good planning and communication between ourselves and the customer.

The main issue is working airside in and around moving aircraft, Cabletec Communications have gone through stringent security awareness and airside awareness courses to allow our engineers to work airside, The main section of fibre, a 24-Core Singlemode steel taped fibre cable, is approximatly 2.2km in length, this is to be installed without any joint to keep the link as fast a possible. The cable will need to be installed at night to avoid the majority of Aircraft movements and our installation team will be escorted by the Airside Saftey Unit to ensure their safety.
